Quantifying the number of patents a company obtains and determining its ranking with respect to other companies is an indicator of that company’s level of leading innovation. Many companies spend billions of dollars on research and development in order to claim the top spot. Many companies dedicate a substantial portion of their budget to protecting their technology with patents as well.
In 2022 there were 323,018 patents granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The top five leaders by volume were Samsung Electronics Co., LTD with 8,513 granted patents, IBM with 4,743 granted patents, LG with 4,580 granted patents, Toyota with 3,056 granted patents and Cannon with 3,046 granted patents.
Interestingly, IBM dropped the top spot to Samsung by a sizeable margin. In 2021, IBM was granted 8,540 patents and Samsung was granted 8,517. Therefore, in just one year IBM showed a 44% drop in their innovation. Other notable U.S. companies are Raytheon at number 9, Intel at number 12, Dell at number 13, Apple at number 14, Google at number 15, Amazon at number 16 and Microsoft at number 18.
